Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education
At Hitherfield, PSHCE is an integral part of everything we do in order to ensure our children understand themselves physically, emotionally and socially to enable them to lead fulfilling and happy lives; thrive as individuals and play an active part in society. PSHCE is delivered through a planned programme of learning (that aims to provide the skills, knowledge and understanding needed for them to be able to manage their lives).
Alongside the taught curriculum, Hitherfield develops PSHCE through:
- Our pastoral system (including our behavior management structure and whole school values)
- Whole school initiatives such as anti-bullying week
- Use of the edible garden
- Guest speakers
- Educational visits
- Themed assemblies.

Through all of these, we aim to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that equips the children with realistic and relevant information on topics such as: keeping healthy; managing risk; emotional wellbeing; relationships; careers information; cultural awareness and tackling discrimination.
We have also just begun our journey towards the Rights Respecting Schools Award. A programme, run by UNICEF, that aims to put children’s rights at the centre of education in order to help them to develop their well-being and reach their potential. We will be reviewing our policies; drawing together existing initiatives; updating the curriculum and developing learning opportunities to show that the principles of equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation underpin education at Hitherfield.
